Into the E-Metropolis: Case Study

Into the E-Metropolis was a workshop-based initiative aimed at reshaping the narrative surrounding electronic waste in Ghana, specifically focusing on TANTRI, Cape Coast. Rather than perpetuating the idea of Ghana as a "computer graveyard" for discarded technology, the project illuminated the intricate ecosystem of second-hand computer dealers, repairers, scrap-dealers, and metal casters who played a vital role in the lifecycle of electronic goods. Rooted in Afrofuturism, Into the E-Metropolis facilitated meaningful dialogues and collaborative workshops with these workers to explore the past, present, and future of their knowledge and practices.

The initiative resulted in the creation of three site-specific art and design installations: an interactive installation, a sculpture, and a mobile makerspace hub. These pieces successfully bridged traditional knowledge and techniques with contemporary technology, ecological concerns, and sustainability. The project was a collaborative effort involving the University of Cape Coast and the S+T+ARTS network, merging artistic expression with scientific innovation to empower e-waste workers. These workers, often facing precarious conditions due to a lack of shared infrastructure, benefited from the project’s efforts to promote sustainable, community-based knowledge sharing.

Workshops were organised in stages, starting with repairers and dismantlers, followed by scrap-dealers and local metal recyclers. The final workshop brought these groups together to co-create the mobile makerspace hub, which was designed as a long-term platform for connecting e-waste workers with the university, fostering creativity and promoting sustainable practices.

Beyond the physical outcomes, Into the E-Metropolis produced online publications, including interviews and toolkits, which were made accessible to the broader community. A documentary was also created, tracing the lifecycle of electronic objects, further raising awareness of the critical but often overlooked contributions of e-waste workers. By the end of the initiative, Into the E-Metropolis had successfully sparked ongoing conversations about sustainable futures and the essential role of e-waste workers in the global technology ecosystem.
